Dr. Dement, who is Dr. Carskadon's mentor and hence progenitor of our alums, has shared his wisdom and wit about sleep in a wonderful book that merges science and anecdote from a lifetime of sleep research.
The Promise of Sleep available in a paperback edition through Dell Publishing.
Dr. Carskadon has two edited books now available through such outlets as
Amazon or
Barnes & Noble. The first is a compilation of articles specifically about adolescent sleep patterns (in some chapters the adolescents are nonhumans!). The full reference is: Carskadon, M.A. (Editor).
Adolescent Sleep Patterns: Biological, Social, and Psychological Influences. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2002. One chapter, by Carol Worthman and Melissa Melby, provides the first comprehensive description of sleep from the perspective of an anthropologist. According to Carskadon, "it is stunning in its scope and analysis" and not to be missed. Kyla Wahlstrom's chapter on adolescent sleep and educational structures is also quite instructive. This book may be useful to sleep experts, psychologists, educators, and parents concerned with adolescent sleep patterns. A paperback or web edition of this book is forthcoming.
Another book that Dr. Carskadon was involved in is more clinically oriented. The full reference is: Lee-Chiong T.L., Sateia, M.J., and Carskadon, M.A. (Editors).
Sleep Medicine, Hanley & Belfus, Inc., Philadelphia, 2002. This book is a comprehensive volume covering sleep physiology and sleep disorders medicine in some detail and is intended for the medical community.
Dr. Carskadon was guest editor, along with former Sleep Lab Fellow, Oskar Jenni, MD, of an issue of
Sleep Medicine Clinics that focuses on children and adolescents. The volume is a lovely compilation of papers about sleep and sleep disorders in young people. Jenni, O.G. and Carskadon, M.A. (Guest Eds.)
Sleep Medicine Clinics: Sleep in Children and Adolescents. Philadelphia. W.B. Saunders (Elsevier), Philadephia, 2007.
Jodi Mindell's book,
Sleeping Through the Night, was first released in 1997 and continues to go strong. Published by HarperPerennial, a division of
Harper Collins publishers, Jodi's book is a must-read for parents rising to the challenge of managing their own and their baby's sleep.
Avi Sadeh's book,
Sleeping Like a Baby, has been out in a Hebrew edition and the English translation was released in 2001 by Yale University Press. Here's an excerpt from Dr. Carskadon's book-jacket quote, "This tranquil, engaging book offers accurate information about sleep of infants and young children and includes many insightful vignettes..." Avi also has a
web site especially for those with an interest in infant sleep.
Amy Wolfson's book,
The Woman's Book of Sleep, remains available through New Harbinger Publications. As Judith Owens notes on the book cover, this book is "written with compassion and a deep appreciation for the complex nature of women's lives in our society..."
Of course, many of our alums authored articles in
The Encyclopedia of Sleep and Dreaming, edited by Dr. Carskadon and still available through check out Amazon.com.
